Ingredients

  • packaged caramels
  • butter
  • evaporated milk
  • German chocolate cake mix
  • chopped pecans
  • semi sweet chocolate chips

See quantities in recipe card below.

Instructions

This recipe could not be easier! Using a cake mix allows it to come together so quickly! Melt the caramels and some of the canned milk together. This makes a creamy caramel layer. Next, using the rest of milk, the dry mix, butter and pecans will make the base and topping layers. Pat half of the batter down into a 9x13 pan. Bake it slightly then sprinkle with chocolate chips. Add the yummy delicious caramel layer and then top with remaining dough. I like to put small pieces in my finger and press flat then lay on top. Leaving little open areas allows the caramel to peek through!

Substitutions

Wrapped caramels and caramel bits are totally interchangeable in this recipe! Use what is convenient for you. I have made this both ways and love them the same!

Equipment

Baking supplies are a necessity and using good quality items are usually super important. You can definitely cut corners on some supplies, but baking sheets and heavy bottom sauce pans are super important! Check out my affiliate link to my favorite baking supplies HERE.
