Ingredients

  • stew meat
  • oil (lard, bacon grease, etc)
  • onion
  • green bell pepper, diced
  • tomato sauce or large tomato
  • garlic powder
  • ground cumin
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • chili powder
  • all-purpose flour
  • water or chicken stock
  • Flour tortillas, rice or mashed potatoes, for serving

Instructions

To begin, heat a dutch over or deep skillet over high heat and brown the stew meat along with the onions and green pepper, until the meat develops rich flavor and color. Next, stir in the tomato sauce or fresh tomato, followed by the garlic powder, cumin, salt, pepper, and chili powder. Once everything is well combined, sprinkle the flour evenly over the meat mixture and stir thoroughly to coat. Then, slowly add the water or stock, mixing well to create a smooth gravy without lumps. Bring the mixture to a boil before covering the pan and reducing the heat to low. Allow the Carne Guisada to simmer for about 1ยฝ hours, or until the beef is perfectly tender and full of flavor. Finally, taste the gravy and adjust the seasonings if needed before serving. This hearty Tex-Mex dish is delicious served with Spanish rice, warm flour tortillas, or even creamy mashed potatoes.

Equipment

I love using a dutch oven or enameled cast iron pot for this type of dish. It truly regulates the heat so well. I would recommend this one.

Storage

I love the leftovers from this recipe. I think it tastes even better the next day! Making this a great leftover meal to take to work or school. It is rich so a little goes a long way!

I've never had carne guisada but I had all the ingredients in my pantry, and stewing beef in my freezer. We all loved this flavorful meal served with tortillas! Will be making again - thank you!
