Ingredients

  • cream cheese
  • sharp cheddar cheese
  • dry ranch seasoning
  • salt/pepper
  • granulated garlic
  • pecans for rolling

See exact quantities in recipe card below.

Instructions

Plan ahead by setting out the cream cheese to softenโ€”it mixes much more easily at room temperature. Once softened, add the cream cheese and remaining ingredients (except the pecans) to a mixing bowl and using a hand mixer, mix until well combined.

Finely chop the pecans and spread them evenly over a strip of plastic wrap. Shape the cheese mixture into one large ball or two smaller ones, then gently roll them over the pecans to coat all sides. Use the plastic wrap to help shape and smooth out the cheese ball, wrapping it tightly to hold its form. Place in the refrigerator to firm up slightly before serving.

Serving

I like to serve cheese balls with firmer crackers. So I use Wheat Thin style or Triscuits. To be totally honest the Fire Roasted Tomato Triscuits taste AMAZING with this cheese ball.

FAQ

I am allergic to nuts, what is another option?

this cheese ball can be plain! or add chopped chives or chopped cooked bacon

Will low-fat cream cheese work?

Yes, the โ…“ fat cream cheese works just as well!

Should I keep this cold?

No, it's best to serve this at room temperature so that it cuts and spreads easier.

Story Time

A sweet friend taught me how to make this cheese ball over a decade ago while we were hosting a gathering together. She was so gracious in sharing her tips and tricks with me. And even telling me to add cranberries at Christmas to make it festive! She was actually a dear friend of my momโ€™s, which made the connection even more special. Since her passing, this simple recipe has become something I truly treasure. Every time I make it, I think of herโ€”and sharing it now feels like a small way to keep her memory alive.

This simple cheese ball is always a crowd-pleaserโ€”great for parties and holidays!

Storage

Cheese Balls are so easy to store! Just place in an airtight container or wrap in plastic wrap tightly and store in fridge. Be sure and check the expiration date on your cream cheese package, but the cheese ball should stay fresh for a week!

Equipment

Using a food processor makes grating the cheese go so much quicker! Do you have one? Mine is a little more heavy duty, but I use it ALL THE TIME! Here is a link!

Tips

  • Cheese - I highly recommend grating your own cheese! It will taste so much better! Through the years I have also found that sharp cheddar gives the best flavor.
  • Seasoning - Any brand of ranch seasoning will work...even homemade!
  • Gloves - If you have vinyl gloves...this is the recipe to wear them. That cheese sure does cling to your hands!
  • Plastic Wrap - Be sure and read my instructions above on the plastic wrap trick!

Classic Cheese Ball

This classic cheese ball is creamy, flavorful, and always a party favorite. Make it ahead and roll it in chopped pecans for an easy, crowd-pleasing appetizer!
Prep Time10 minutes mins
chill time30 minutes mins
Total Time40 minutes mins
Course: Appetizer
Keyword: cheddar cheese
Servings: 10 servings
Author: Misty Tannery

Ingredients

  • 8 oz package quality cream cheese room temperature
  • 8 oz quality sharp cheddar cheese shredded, do not buy pre shredded
  • 1 cup pecans chopped, I like mine finely chopped
  • 1 ยฝ Tablespoons dry ranch seasoning
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • โ…› teaspoon granulated garlic

Instructions

  • Mix cheeses and seasonings together with hand mixer until well combined.
Form into 1 round ball or 2 smaller servings.
Place chopped nuts on a sheet of plastic wrap.
Roll the cheese ball in the nuts until covered.
Wrapped tightly in the plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes or until ready to serve.
Serve room temperature with favorite crackers.

Notes

- room temperature cream cheese is best
- I shred my own cheese as the packaged doesnโ€™t taste quite as fresh
- my favorite crackers for this is Fire Roasted Tomato Triscuits and Wheat Thins. The Triscuits bring in an additional flavor and the Wheat Thins are basic but sturdy
